How often have I
heard people say, “I don’t care what anyone thinks about me…” While I understand we can’t go around
worrying about what everyone thinks about us, the way we live, dress, act,
etc… We should care about what some people think. We should have people in our life that we
don’t want to disappoint. We need people
who will hold us accountable. We need people
in our life who are watching and listening…they’re the ones who will praise us
when we do well, but they’ll also correct us if we’re out of line.
We all need
peers…people who are in the same boat as we are. They’re struggling just as we are, usually close to the same age, involved in the same aspects of life as we are. These are people we can relate to – cry on
their shoulder because we’re all going through the same things.
But we also need
protégés in our life. Usually a younger
person that we are pouring ourselves into, investing in their future. Someone in which we see potential and believe in. We
encourage these folks, stay in touch, pray for them, and sing their praises.
But we also need
mentors. These mentors are the folks we don’t
want to disappoint. We care about what
these folks think about us. Before we
make life changing decisions, we think about what they would do, and we might
even call and ask their advice. Mentors
are like the corner fence post – unmovable and steadfast.
The Proverbs
writer said it well… “Choose friends carefully.” Peers and protégés …and most
of all choose your mentors carefully. Be
careful who becomes your hero. Be
careful where you get your advice.
Choose someone who loves God and loves you. While it is true we are what we are by the
grace of God – Many of us are products of the company we keep. Find a mentor that loves God and then do your
best not to disappoint them. M
